NATIONAL SECURITY REQUIRES LOCAL LFP BATTERY SUPPLY
James McFadden, CFA (June 5, 2026)
Most discussions about the pressing need to ramp up local battery production center on growing commercial energy storage demand from energy storage and AI data center requirements. A recent article in the Atlantic Council gave a very good perspective on the incredible rise of battery strategy on the modern battlefield and why a local lithium iron phosphate (“LFP”) battery supply chain is ever moreso a question of national security.
According to the authors of the article in The Atlantic, LFP batteries are serving the following uses and creating the following advantages on the modern battlefield:
- Allow unmanned aerial vehicles to drop payloads more effectively;
- Permit directed weapons to more precisely target incoming threats;
- Power crucial areas of manned submarines;
- Power ground-based robots that can evacuate casualties during times of war; the robots’ motors represent a tactical battlefield advantage compared with the much louder internal combustion engines of traditional vehicles.
From a military perspective — indeed, from a civilian one too — a central concern is that other countries control not only the vast majority of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery production (nearly 100% currently, according to various sources), but also the supply chains for the raw materials that make up the batteries and access to such supply chains could become impossible during times of crisis.
By mass, phosphate comprises 61% of the cathode of an LFP battery. Consequently, creating a North American source of battery-grade phosphate is a priority for national security. Such magnitude of demand for LFP batteries and for high-purity phosphate suggests that deposits of igneous phosphate will become increasingly valuable for supply of this high purity phosphate material. This is because over 90% of high purity igneous phosphate converts directly in battery-grade phosphoric acid with recyclable by-products and minimal environmental impacts.
Igneous anorthosite phosphate deposits, such as the First Phosphate Bégin-Lamarche property, are extremely rare and constitute the top 1% of all global phosphate deposits. Furthermore, First Phosphate Corp. is the only igneous anorthosite phosphate producer fully and singularly focused on the development of a mine-to-market LFP battery supply chain in North America.
Through a vertically integrated mine-to-market LFP battery supply chain strategy, First Phosphate plays a central role in achieving the shared goal of re-onshoring the LFP battery supply chain in North America. First Phosphate has produced LFP battery cells using North American critical minerals, including high purity phosphate from its Bégin-Lamarche property.
About First Phosphate Corp.
First Phosphate (CSE: PHOS) (OTCQX: FRSPF) (OTCQX ADR: FPHOY) (FSE: KD0) is a mineral exploration and development and clean technology company dedicated to building and reshoring a vertically integrated mine-to-market supply chain for the production of LFP batteries in North America. Target markets include energy storage, data centers, robotics, mobility, and national security.
First Phosphate’s flagship Bégin-Lamarche property, located in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Québec, Canada, represents a rare North American igneous phosphate resource producing high-purity phosphate characterized by very low levels of impurities.
