Charged EVs | Altilium launches online platform for selling end-of-life EV batteries

UK clean technology firm Altilium has introduced an innovative online platform designed to facilitate the responsible sale and recycling of spent electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This new initiative, dubbed Recell.store, aims to streamline the recycling process for businesses turning to sustainable practices by offering a user-friendly interface to manage used battery transactions.

### Streamlining Recycling with Recell.store

Recell.store serves as a dedicated online portal for UK businesses eager to offload their used batteries either for recycling or for repurposing in second-life applications. By registering on the platform, users can enter their company information and receive a direct quote for their battery packs. Following a successful transaction, Altilium takes on the responsibility of collecting the batteries and transporting them to its recycling facilities in the UK.

### Advanced Recycling Techniques

Upon arrival at Altilium’s facilities, the collected EV battery packs undergo a meticulous dismantling and shredding process. This is part of a larger initiative to recover critical battery metals, including lithium, cobalt, and nickel, along with graphite. Utilizing its proprietary EcoCathode technology, Altilium claims to achieve recovery rates of over 95% for battery metals from end-of-life batteries. This not only alleviates the cost burdens associated with sourcing virgin materials—potentially trimming costs by up to 20%—but also significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 74% compared to traditional extraction methods.

### A Strong Network for Sustainable Practices

Businesses can further enhance their recycling efforts by registering with Altilium’s extensive network of affiliated recyclers. This network, which includes collaborations with vehicle dismantlers, automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and insurance companies, offers comprehensive support in managing battery waste. These partnerships are crucial as they help mitigate the logistical and financial strains often associated with EV battery storage.

Rod Savage, Altilium’s Programme Director for Batteries and Black Mass, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “By facilitating the recycling and reuse of these batteries, we are helping to reduce waste and conserve valuable resources. By registering with Recell.store, users can have full peace of mind knowing we will handle the collection of these hazardous materials and the recycling of the battery in a way that is safe and environmentally friendly.”

### Addressing Growing Environmental Concerns

Altilium is already making strides in the industry by collecting end-of-life EV batteries from various automotive OEMs in the UK. They are collaborating with partners such as Synetiq and Connected Energy to ensure effective recycling processes at their Devon facilities. In response to the increasing demand for battery recycling, the company is also planning to construct a substantial EV battery recycling plant in Teesside that will be capable of processing batteries from over 150,000 EVs annually.

With this new initiative and upcoming projects, Altilium is positioning itself as a leader in the sustainable management of EV batteries, addressing both environmental impacts and resource conservation.

In summary, Altilium’s Recell.store is more than just a platform; it represents a pivotal step towards a circular economy in the electric vehicle sector, helping businesses transition to more sustainable practices while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
