TORONTO–Electra Battery Materials Corporation (NASDAQ: ELBM; TSX-V: ELBM) has made a significant move by appointing Michael Green as Construction Director, a strategic choice aimed at driving the completion of North America’s inaugural cobalt sulfate refinery located in Temiskaming Shores, Ontario. With a robust background spanning over three decades in construction management, Green is set to leverage his extensive experience to ensure the refinery reaches operational status effectively and efficiently.

A Proven Leader in Construction Management

Michael Green joins Electra with a notable reputation for excellence in overseeing large-scale infrastructure projects. His impressive history includes prominent roles at leading firms such as Trans Mountain Corporation, Enbridge Pipelines, K+S Potash, and Suncor, distinguishing himself in the fields of mining and power generation. Notably, prior to this role, he was serving as Construction Manager for Calibre Mining’s Valentine Gold Mine, where he honed his skills in resource project delivery and execution.

Trent Mell, the CEO of Electra, expressed his enthusiasm about Green’s appointment, stating, “Mike’s extensive experience and proven track record as a construction lead make him a valuable addition to our team as we move toward the final phase of construction at the Ontario Refinery.” Mell emphasized that Green’s commitment to safety and his knack for managing resource projects will be paramount in meeting construction schedules and budgetary constraints.

Strategic Importance of the Ontario Refinery

The Ontario refinery not only signifies a milestone for Electra but also plays a pivotal role in reshaping the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain within North America. The facility is the cornerstone of Electra’s ambitious vision to localize critical mineral refining processes. By advancing this project, Electra aims to establish itself as a key player in the battery materials sector, which is vital for sustaining the burgeoning EV market.

Mark Trevisiol, Vice President of Project Development at Electra, noted, “Mike has built his career managing complex construction projects. We are confident that his skills and hands-on experience will lead the project team to successfully execute the remaining construction at our refinery site.” Such leadership is crucial as Electra continues to work toward onshoring other critical operations like battery recycling and nickel production, reinforcing the infrastructure needed for the clean energy transition.

The Broader Vision for North America

Electra’s commitment extends beyond the immediate project at the Ontario refinery. The company aspires to expand its operations to encompass the entire EV supply chain. This strategy not only aims to supply essential materials for electric batteries but also seeks to innovate in battery recycling, thereby contributing to sustainable practices in the industry.

By focusing on domestically sourcing critical minerals, Electra positions itself at the forefront of the green energy movement in North America, addressing both supply chain vulnerabilities and environmental sustainability concerns. This comprehensive approach highlights the interconnected nature of energy production, resource management, and economic development.

As Electra moves forward, the construction of the cobalt sulfate refinery remains a pivotal step, with Michael Green’s leadership promising to guide the project to successful completion and operation, paving the way for a more sustainable future in battery production and recycling.
