This means that Volt could receive a significant grant of up to $100 million to assist in the construction of a graphite processing plant located in Alabama.

## The Importance of Graphite in Modern Technology

The focus on graphite is critical, particularly given the increasing importance of battery materials in technology and defense. Volt’s innovative approach to graphite purification avoids conventional methods that involve harmful hydrofluoric acid and energy-intensive furnaces, aligning with global sustainability goals. As of 2024, Chinese firms dominate, accounting for roughly 90% of the global refined graphite supply, highlighting the urgent need for independent operations in countries like the U.S., Australia, and Canada.

### The Alabama Graphite Belt: An Untapped Resource

Alabama holds the largest graphite deposit in the contiguous United States, nestled in a 230,000-acre region stretching across Coosa, Clay, and Chilton counties. Historically, this area was mined from the 1890s until the 1950s, peaking during the World Wars when graphite demand surged.

Volt and other battery metals companies are establishing facilities in this region, benefiting from the rich mineral resources. The Alabama Graphite Belt is poised to play a pivotal role in bolstering the U.S. supply chain for critical minerals as the country shifts towards renewable energy and electric vehicles (EVs).

### Strengthening the Battery Supply Chain

The Department of Energy (DOE) is proactively investing nearly $1 billion in advancing U.S. mining and manufacturing capabilities focused on critical minerals. This funding aims to bolster companies like Volt, highlighting the current administration’s commitment to securing a domestic battery supply chain.

In July, Volt made a strategic decision to relocate its headquarters from Rutger’s EcoComplex to The EDGE at the Alabama Entrepreneurship Institute in Tuscaloosa, indicating its investment in local innovation ecosystems. The proposed graphite processing facility will be situated at the Tuscaloosa County Airport Industrial Park, pending final investment approvals.

### Collaborations and Innovations

By 2022, a battery materials supply chain had already begun to take root in Alabama, with various established manufacturers in the region, including Mercedes-Benz, which launched high-performance lithium-ion battery packs for its electric SUV models. The nearby Li-Cycle facility, capable of recycling 10,000 metric tons of battery waste annually, underscores the region’s growing importance in the electric vehicle sector.

Other players, such as the Canada South Star Battery Metals Corporation, received funding to explore graphite mining projects in Alabama, further exemplifying the collaborative efforts in establishing a robust supply chain. South Star is dedicated to integrating environmentally sustainable practices into its operations, reinforcing the trend within the industry focused on low-impact production methods.

### Upcoming Projects: A Look at the Future

Westwater Resources has also launched the first phase of its graphite processing plant in Kellyton, Alabama, with plans to extend its operations significantly. The company aims to produce purified graphite for battery manufacturers, already securing contracts with notable firms including SK On and Fiat Chrysler America.

In terms of economic incentives, Alabama is actively supporting these initiatives. The state provided a substantial $1 million Community Development Block Grant aimed at enhancing infrastructure for Westwater’s operations, ensuring the project’s long-term viability.

While the general Uniform Severance Tax applies to most minerals in Alabama, graphite mining operates under specific local tax rules. This includes a unique excise tax enforced by Coosa County, showcasing how local government policies can empower regional mining operations while ensuring fiscal benefits for the community.
