U.S. Upstream Oil and Gas: Dealmaking Hits $105 Billion in 2024 – News and Statistics

The U.S. upstream oil and gas sector witnessed remarkable dealmaking activities amounting to $105 billion in 2024, ranking as the third highest annual total recorded. According to a report by consultancy Enverus, the industry’s momentum decelerated in the latter half of the year, as the volume of available acquisitions dropped significantly.
Reflecting on IndexBox’s market analysis, the previous year had set a staggering benchmark of $192 billion in mergers and acquisitions, fueled largely by the monumental $60 billion merger between Exxon Mobil and Pioneer Natural Resources. During 2024, while the Permian Basin remained the focal point for many endeavors, the search for viable prospects expanded beyond traditional territories, as revealed by Enverus’ report. “We are going to be in for some interesting surprises this year in terms of operators looking at regions and plays we wouldn’t have expected,” remarked Andrew Dittmar, Enverus principal analyst.
The latter part of the year saw a noticeable dip, with just $9.6 billion recorded in Q4. This decline, attributed to a scarcity of acquisition targets and major E&P firms focusing on assimilating their prior transactions, suggests a potential drive towards further industry consolidation as smaller enterprises might consider exiting. Noteworthy transactions included Coterra Energy‘s acquisition of Avant Natural Resources and Franklin Mountain Energy for a total of $3.95 billion in the Delaware Basin, alongside FourPoint Energy‘s significant purchase of Ovintiv‘s Uinta assets in Utah for $2 billion.
Moreover, the value of gas-focused mergers and acquisitions surged fourfold in 2024, surpassing the $20 billion mark for the first time since 2016. As excitement grows around liquefied natural gas and increasing power demand, Dittmar indicated an impending strategic pivot toward gas, anticipating active involvement from stakeholders.
